But, if you go to the right water damage company your stress levels will be much lower.  If you live in Pasadena or Alta Dena, your chances of water damage from weather are slim, but that doesn’t mean you’re invincible.  Water damage can occur with a breakdown of the structure of the home causing damage to your furniture, electronics and floor.  For water repair the first thing you need to do is to call the professionals. Your best bet is to avoid water damage from the start. Leak detection is your number one preventative measure.  Before they arrive, there are a few things you can try.

Move Objects to Safety:

Firstly, transfer any breakable items and valuables to a safe place. Empty the cabinets and place the contents in a place where they will not be disturbed again. This will also allow the flood restoration company to do its work quickly while reducing the damage to your home.

Water Extraction

Then start squeezing out as much water from hard surface floors as you can. If your home is carpeted the water damage cleanup will be best left to professionals. Use a dehumidifier if you have one, but keep in mind it won’t be as effective as a professional grade one.  Bare in mind that an insufficient de-humidification can cause water to vaporize into the air, which can cause greater damage due to a rise in humidity.

Air Conditioner Temperature

Don’t jump to lowering the temperature of your air conditioner to extremely cold temperature.  This isn’t the solution for water damage repair.  Too cold temperatures will really slow down the evaporation process.  What you can do instead is slowly raise the temperature to dry out the carpet.  If you have a fan, use it as well to help the process. If your home is flooded, turn off the gas and power from the main source. Don’t worry about doing this for small puddles and small leaks.

Be careful with handling electrical appliances and don’t do it unless you are insulated properly. Don’t risk standing in water to turn off the electricity.  Let an electrician do this.
